Reading a Dental Quote in Spanish: A Glossary for Patients Comparing Colombian Treatment Plans

12 October 2026·7 min read·Spanish-English glossary

The clinic sent its quote in Spanish. Maybe you speak some, maybe none. Either way, a dental treatment plan uses vocabulary that never shows up in a phrasebook, and a machine translation of “incrustación” or “prótesis híbrida” will not tell you what you are buying.

This glossary is organised the way a Colombian quote is usually organised: assessment first, then treatment by category, then the money and the small print. Use it to read your plan line by line, then confirm anything that affects price or materials with the clinic directly. Usage can vary between clinics, so treat these as typical meanings, not legal definitions.

The header and assessment lines

SpanishPlain EnglishWhat to check
Cotización / presupuestoQuote / estimateIs it called a firm price or an estimate? Is there a validity date?
Plan de tratamientoTreatment planDoes it list every tooth and procedure separately?
Valoración / consultaAssessment / consultationCharged separately? Deducted from treatment?
Radiografía panorámicaPanoramic X-rayIncluded, or an extra line?
Radiografía periapicalSmall X-ray of one or a few teethHow many are planned?
Tomografía / TAC / CBCT3D cone-beam scanUsually needed before implant surgery; who reads it?
Historia clínicaClinical record / chartCan you get a copy after treatment?
DiagnósticoDiagnosisIs there a reason given for each procedure?
Diseño de sonrisaSmile designA planning step or a marketing label for a cosmetic package? Ask what is included.

Teeth and positions

You will see tooth numbers, often in the two-digit international format. You may also see these words:

Everyday restorative treatment

SpanishPlain EnglishWhat to check
Resina / obturaciónTooth-coloured fillingPriced per tooth or per surface?
AmalgamaSilver (amalgam) fillingLess common now; confirm if you have a preference
Incrustación (inlay / onlay)Lab-made partial restorationMaterial named? Inlay or onlay?
Núcleo / poste / pernoCore build-up / postOften a separate line before a crown on a root-treated tooth
Endodoncia / tratamiento de conductoRoot canal treatmentPer tooth; molars often cost more than front teeth
RetratamientoRedoing a previous root canalMore complex than a first root canal
Exodoncia / extracciónExtractionSimple or surgical (“quirúrgica”)?
Cordales incluidos / retenidosImpacted wisdom teethPriced per tooth? Sedation separate?

Crowns, veneers and bridges

This is where mistranslation costs money, because the material often matters more than the product name.

SpanishPlain EnglishWhat to check
CoronaFull crownWhich material? Which tooth?
CarillaVeneerPorcelain or resin? How much tooth preparation?
Carilla en resina / directaComposite veneer made in the mouthUsually different durability and price from porcelain
Carilla en porcelana / disilicatoLab-made ceramic veneer (lithium disilicate is a common ceramic)Lab named? Shade process?

CementaciónCementing / fitting the final restorationUsually included; ask if it is a separate visit
The “carilla” trap. Some advertising uses “carillas” loosely for any cosmetic front-tooth work. Ask whether you are being quoted for veneers on the front surface only or full crowns, and how much natural tooth will be removed in either case.

Five words that are easy to misread

  1. “Desde” means “from”. A price “desde” a figure is a starting price, not your price.
  2. “Unidad” can mean a single crown or one tooth in a bridge. A three-unit bridge is three units.
  3. “Sesión” is a visit. Whitening or gum treatment priced “por sesión” may need several.
  4. “Provisional” means temporary, not provisionally approved.
  5. “Garantía” is a guarantee, but its conditions (check-ups, hygiene, no work by other dentists) are what make it useful.

A short example, translated

Here is how a few typical lines might read, with the questions a careful patient would send back. The wording is illustrative, not taken from any real clinic.

Notice how much of the real cost sits in the conditional phrases and the exclusions rather than in the procedure names themselves.

How to use this glossary

Understanding the words is the first step. Deciding whether the plan is right for your mouth is a clinical question for a qualified dentist who has examined you.

Common questions

Should I rely on an online translator for my dental quote?

A translator is fine for a first read, but dental terms are often translated too literally or inconsistently. Use it to get the gist, then ask the clinic to confirm the meaning of any line that affects price, materials or which teeth are treated.

What is the difference between a corona and a carilla?

In Colombian quotes, a corona is normally a full crown that covers the whole visible tooth, while a carilla is a veneer bonded mainly to the front surface. They involve different amounts of tooth preparation and different prices, so make sure you know which one each line refers to.

Does 'valoración' mean the same as a consultation?

Usually it refers to the initial assessment or evaluation visit. Ask whether it includes X-rays or a 3D scan, whether it is charged separately, and whether its cost is deducted from treatment if you go ahead.

Can I ask the clinic for an English version of my quote?

Yes, and many clinics that treat international patients can provide one. Ask for the Spanish original as well, and keep both. If the two versions ever differ, the original is what the clinic wrote.

Why does my quote use the word 'provisional' so much?

Provisional means temporary. Temporary crowns, temporary teeth on implants and temporary bridges are all common. Check whether the price of the provisional is separate from the final restoration and whether both are on the quote.
